model, blogger and sc native nikia phoenix not only will be involved in a panel titled ladies first, focusing on women involved in everything from entertainment, fashion, art and music, she will also be having a workshop giving the ins and outs for modeling. it’ll be held on the second day of cola-con (oct. 6th) and if you’re an aspiring model needing advice or just feedback on those pics you’ve been taking (trying to get them in king magazine, eh?) be sure to sign up. seating is limited and will be from noon til two on the 6th. want to sign up? email me: preach@preachjacobs.com. ticket must be purchased to partcilpate.

We are excited to have Supastition (a.k.a. Kam Moye) performing at Cola-Con this year as well as the other dope indie artists we have setup to accompany the headliners. I know people have asked questions about when and where people are performing and it took a while because thangs happen to the wire with these shows (between booking flights and contracts…sheesh!) But anyways here’s what we’re looking like for the performers touching the stage for Cola-Con.

we had a kickstarter for cola-con and not only did we meet our goal, we surpassed it by $1,000! as a thank you to all of yall we invite you to the cola-con thank you party at the sheraton rooftop saturday sept. 15th. it starts at 9 and goes on until they kick us out. preach jacobs will be spinning the best in hip-hop, soul, funk and more. come by and have a drink and party with us. it’s free!

MBS: Tell us who you are
SN:My name is Shari Neal and I am a 27-year old lifelong Chicagoan of Belizean descent.

MBS: Tell us about your business
SN: I am the owner & designer for Bon Bon Vie, an online tee boutique (www.wearbonbonvie.com). Bon Bon Vie is my baby until I actually decide to have children. During the day, I am an Interactive Developer at a pharmaceutical advertising agency.

MBS: How did u get started with your business?
SN: For real though, I woke up one day and just decided to do it. I had been wanting to start a business for year. I had toyed with the idea of doing handbags & home furnishings and I previously did freelance design/web work. But I wanted to really to something where I had full creative control that I would also enjoy and possibly make some cash…T-shirt design was my answer. I had tee designs in my head and ideas I’d written down through the years, so I took 3 of my idea, some cash I had saved up and got them printed.

MBS: Do have plans to venture into other týpes of fashion with your clothing line?
SN: Definitely. I love fashion. I dabbled in fashion design in high school & college and would love to revisit that.

MBS: Tell me your five fave artists and how they inspire your work
SN:Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan Just kidding :) Ok, in no particular order:

Legends: Saul Bass, Herb Lubalin, Ernie Barnes, Romare Bearden, Tamara DeLempicka

Current: Vaughn Fender, Alejandro Paul, Stina Persson, Andrea Pippins, Cecê Nobre… They inspire me because they make dope work.

MBS: Greatest work achievement to date.
SN:Starting Bon Bon Vie and turning it into a successful business in less than a year.

John Jennings author of 'Black Comix' is on a panel at Cola-Con

John Jennings is an illustrator, designer, and new media curator whose work combines Afro-futurist narrative with historical racial iconography, and often explores the influence of hip-hop expressive culture on American visual design. His publications include the graphic novel, The Hole: Consumer Culture, and two comics collections, Black Comix: African American Independent Comics, Art and Culture, and Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics with writer Damian Duffy, and his work will be featured in the comics anthology, African American Classics, forthcoming in December 2011. Jennings is also Associate Professor of Visual Studies at SUNY Buffalo. He will be appearing on the Cola-Con panel about “Comics and the Visual Culture of Hip Hop.”
